Day 3 is full of sprints - with Anna Meares & Vicky Pendleton going head-to-head this evening, the men's keirin, and both men's & women's omnium rounds.
Today we're live on BBC2 from 19:00-21:00, with streams for that part, and BBC red button & UK-only web coverage after that.
A very rough timetable of the evening session's events (bear in mind, I can't add, so you might be better off working it out from the event programme)
18:30 Women's sprint semi-finals race 1 (Meares v Pendleton, Lee v Guo)
18:40 Men's keirin 2nd round
18:50 Women's sprint semi-finals race 2
19:00 Men's omnium round 5 - 15km scratch
19:20 Women's sprint semi-finals race 3 (if needed)
19:25 Men's keirin Final places 7-12
19:30 Men's keirin Final 1-6
19:35 Women's sprint finals 1st race
19:45 Men's keirin ceremony
19:55 Women's sprint finals 2nd race
20:05 Women's Individual Pursuit final (Rowsell v Whitten for gold, Sereikaite v Cure for bronze)
20:15 Women's sprint finals race 3 (if needed)
20:25 Women's IP ceremony
20:33 Men's omnium final round - Kilo TT
21:08 Women's sprint ceremony
21:16 Men's omnium ceremnony
21:24 Women's omnium 3 - elimination race

So what's happened today? Well you can guess, a little, about the women's IP! It should be an exciting final between Jo Rowsell (GB) and Alison Shanks (NZ)
Over in the sprints, the draws have been really unlucky - I think everyone hoped it would come down to Anna Meares v Vicky pendleton for gold, but a real surprise is Wai Sze Lee of Hong Kong getting so far - and no Germans or French in the semis. The race for 5th-8th will have Kaarle McCulloch (Aus), Jess Varnish (GB - who was beaten by Pendelton in her quarter final), Lisandra Guerra Rodriguez (Cub) & Kristina Vogel (Ger) and will be done & dusted by the time tv starts.
EDIT!! The London home advantage is doing a spectacular job for young Jess Varnish - here's the results of the race for 5th-8th place!
5. Jess Varnish (GBr)
6. Lisandra Guerra Rodriguez (Cub)
7. Kristina Vogel (Ger)
8. Kaarle McCulloch (Aus)
The men's keirin has been full of crashes and a few DQs, and looking at the second round, there's one clearly stronger group out there - in fact, race 1 could easily be a Final, rather than a round!
Race 1: Chris Hoy (GB), Rene Enders (Ger), Christos Volikakis (Gre), Teun Mulder (Ned), Matt Crampton (GB) & Azizulhasni Awang (Malaysian, riding for YSD)
Race 2: Joachim Eilers (ERD), Mickael Bourgain (Fra), Kazunari Watanabe (Jpn), Simon Van Velthooven (NZL), Ilya Okunev (Phl) & Phililip Njisane (Tri)
See what I mean? If Bourgain doesn't get through, he should be ashamed of himself!
The men's omnium will be ending, and the standings at the start of the day were
1. Juan Esteban ARANGO (Col), 9 points
2. Elia VIVIANI (Ita) 12
3. Bryan COQUARD (Fra) 16
4. Ho Sung CHO (Kor) 20
5. Zach BELL (Can) 26
6. Luís MANSILLA (Chi) 26
7. Martyn IRVINE (Ire) 27
8. Ben Swift (GBr) 27
9. Rafal Rayajczyk (Pol) 29
10. Shane ARCHBOLD (NZ) 30
But they will have had the IP round before this evening, so look to the comments for an update - and the scratch and the kilo this evening are such different races, it will be interesting to see what happens. Watch out for Albertina in the crowds, cheering for Viviani, and also for the British commentators being incredibly rude about the omnium and omnium riders, complaining that it's terribly unfair Brad Wiggins can't ride the IP in London etc, then turning round and saying it's a fabulous event when it gets to the women, when Laura Trott is doing as well as usual
In the women's omnium, we've had the flying lap, won by China's Li Huang and the points race, won by Mexico's Sofi Arreola, and it really does look like everything could change this evening. I know, I know, I'm one of the few people who is in love with this event in the UK, but I think it's super-exciting, and the elimination is my favourite race! Standings after 2 rounds:
1. Ausrine Trebaite (LTU) 11 points
2. Sarah Hammer (USA) 12
3. Nettie Edmondson (Aus) 12
4. Tara Whitten (Can) 15
5. Tatsiana Sharakova (Blr) 17
6. Kirsten Wild (Ned) 17
7. Li Huang (Chn) 19
8. Laura Trott (GBr) 19
9. Molgorzata Wojtyra (Pol) 20
10. Svitlana Galyuk (Ukr) 20
11. Sofi Arreola (Mex) 20
I'll be watching for Kirsten Wild, who rides a lot of 6-days, and is superb in bunch races, Leire Olaberria (who's sitting 12th) and of course, the usual big rivalry between Sarah Hammer & Tara Whitten
Check out Sum of Marc's previews of the event
You can see the startlists and results via Tissot and live results there too - and there is tv coverage! If you're in the UK, check out BBC2, the red button & streaming on the BBC website - everyone else, see See CyclingFans and Sports-livez - and if you have other links that are country-specific, add them to the links!

thanks
singhstax - February 18, 2012
Links at the bottom of the article, via the usual places!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
thanks
how long from now they go live?
singhstax - February 18, 2012
almost exactly an hour!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Remember to look out for
Njisane Phillip, he’s the fastest thing from the Caribbean in the sprints & Keiren.
singhstax - February 18, 2012
I'm in the velodrome and Elia just took his shirt off.
Also, I’m sitting next to an Italian! Excellent!
Albertina - February 18, 2012 via mobile
So, hyperventilating yet?
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Anna Meares beats Vicky Pendleton in Sprint semi-finals race 1!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
and Shuang Guo beats Wai Sze Lee
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Vicky Pendleton beats Anna Meares, making it 1-all!
Shuang Guo beats Lee again, and makes it straight to the final
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Dang, 3 minutes late
broerie - February 18, 2012
Men's keirin final will be
Chris Hoy (GB), Teun Mulder (Ned), Rene Enders (Ger), Mickael Bourgain (Fra), Simon Van Velthooven (NZ) and Kazunari Watanabe (Jpn)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
strong lineup!
broerie - February 18, 2012
I still think the Race 2 of the 2nd heat was stronger!
Chris Hoy (GB), Rene Enders (Ger), Christos Volikakis (Gre), Teun Mulder (Ned), Matt Crampton (GB) & Azizulhasni Awang (Malaysian, riding for YSD) – WOW!!! Swap out Volikakis and add Bourgain, and it’s the cream of the crop!
Crampton, I think, was caught in a huge crash, and won’t be riding the 7-12 final
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Huge crash?
that sounds like keirin
broerie - February 18, 2012
Ha, yes, it's not a keirin without one
apparently it’s less bad than 1st thought, and he’ll be racing – go Matt!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
We're live!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Pendleton not whiney at all in that interview
broerie - February 18, 2012
I find her quite entertaining
But I would rather see some live action than interviews. Jake Humphries is a national menace.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Is that the Tim-nice-but-dim as lead commentator?
He seems a total twit!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Yeah, the pretty blonde one
I struggle with him. But I think we should be cloning Claire Balding to front all sports, especially with the Olympics coming up.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
I second that emotion!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
She's still banging on about how she's having nightmares, freaking out, etc etc
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
I hear her once every four years, so it's different for me
broerie - February 18, 2012
I absolutely love her when she's racing
but she has a very particular media strategy – lots of talking about how she likes baking and is really a girly, not a nasty butch athlete, and lots and lots and LOTS of talking about how freaked out she gets/how Anna Meares used to be mean to her on the track/how depressed she gets, and it a) gets dull & b) seems disingenuous – fragile little flowers don’t get to be World Champ in something like sprint & keirin over & over & over….
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Did she do this pre-2008?
I get the feeling that she can cope with success in terms of riding psychology, defending titles, etc. That isn’t the same as being famous, though.
She clearly went out and said yes to lots of things (Loaded/FHM/whatever it was being particularly unwise, IMO) and became a public figure in a way that she struggled with. What I see is someone who has struggled for four years to separate cycling from everything else, and blamed the bike for a range of things that made her unhappy. The way she has started talking about “a profession” seems to support the return to enjoying cycling by separating it out.
Just one man’s armchair psychology. I can see how she might frustrate a lot of pepole, but disingenuous seems a little harsh to me.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
She talks about how she had a bit of a breakdown post-2008, because she didn't feel she got the glory
when comparing to Chris Hoy etc, and that did her head in.
You’re probably right. I think she loves it when she’s winning, when she’s not, not so much!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Who's doing the co-commentary?
broerie - February 18, 2012
(the girl)
broerie - February 18, 2012
Magnus?
singhstax - February 18, 2012
That's Dani King!
Gold medal Team Pursuit, rides on the road for Matrix Prendas (aka Horizon, aka the team Mr Helen Wyman is DS for!)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
What a crowd!
broerie - February 18, 2012
Damn, I LOVE watching Meares & Pendleton race!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Meares a bit over confident there?
broerie - February 18, 2012
Pendle just managed to stay in the slipsteam and eventually take the win.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
+ many
as good a sprint race as there is male or female
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Always, always entertaining
and both of them really play to the crowd. I love it, from the moment they are sitting waiting, to staring at each other through their visors, to the racing…. Just spectacular!
(Apologies for over-enthusiasm, track is my first love, & it’s great getting to see it on actual tv!)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
It takes great athletes
to make great competition. They are both great athletes
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Anna Meares also has an entertaining twitter & blog
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
I know how you feel.
Olympic Shot Put is my favorite.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
ever seen this video about Shane Perkins?
Gotta apreciate the way these track sprinters focus on details.
broerie - February 18, 2012
Wow
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Hoy warming up in the background
what a beast!
broerie - February 18, 2012
There is an exciting race on track but they are not showing it
singhstax - February 18, 2012
Guessing Ben Swift just did well in the omnium scratch! Bloody BBC show us the race!!!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
patience!
broerie - February 18, 2012
Not a good scratch from Elia. Down to 5th :'(
Albertina - February 18, 2012 via mobile
Game on
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Exciting stuff here
I think Pendleton has a slight psychological advantage
broerie - February 18, 2012
wow! Risky move by Meares
broerie - February 18, 2012
Clever. Very clever.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
But illegal?
Pendleton was in the red lane
broerie - February 18, 2012
gave a gap. Fair play.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
or maybe not at the exact moment Meares dove down
broerie - February 18, 2012
Look in the paper tomorrow
Looks like she got away with it.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
alls fair in love, war, and sprinting
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Derny!!
Ruthann - February 18, 2012
the deny dude is too skinny
broerie - February 18, 2012
no good.
minor final.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
I mean: Hi, everyone!
Ruthann - February 18, 2012
Haha, my "hi!" tonight is "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
(Hi Ruthann!)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
'sup
broerie - February 18, 2012
Spectacular racing - Meares will race Guo for gold
Pendleton should easily beat Lee for bronze!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Keirin race for 7-12th place!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Malaysian guy was very strong
but went waaaay too early
broerie - February 18, 2012
Is he the dude who got THAT splinter last year?
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
no, that one is riding the finals
broerie - February 18, 2012
Awang (splinter) was second
singhstax - February 18, 2012
Yes, it was
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
bah, I was wrong all the way
broerie - February 18, 2012
The guy that went early is Phillip from Trinidad
singhstax - February 18, 2012
oops, guess I misunderstood
broerie - February 18, 2012
That German trade team jersey is hilarious!
Bring it into the road peloton!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Flower power!
broerie - February 18, 2012
More flower power
The Hong Kong shoes with the Blakeana flowers are tremendous
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Add them together & make it a road suit!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
I love Meares' helmet
broerie - February 18, 2012
It certainly would stand out in the peloton, wouldn't it?
Ruthann - February 18, 2012
We need more faux tattoos on our riders!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Enders will take this.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Keirin 7-12
7. Joachim Eilers (ERD)
8. Azizulhasni Awang (Malaysian, riding for YSD)
9. Christos Volikakis (Gre)
10. Phililip Njisane (Tri)
11. Matt Crampton (GB)
12. Ilya Okunev (Phl)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
I always laugh when they talk about Chris Hoy having tactics
for years, his “tactic” was ALWAYS “go to the fornt & ride very fast”!!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
brilliant tactics here!
broerie - February 18, 2012
Well, he managed a tactical ride there... just.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
He is THE MAN
andrewp - February 18, 2012
wow
singhstax - February 18, 2012
+ wow!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
wow. What a race.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
The distance he had to make up, in such a short time, it's just amazing! Wow is right!
Ruthann - February 18, 2012
fantastic riding so far
broerie - February 18, 2012
Amazing
I don’t watch enough track to know, but it must be pretty unusual to win from that high up the banking, no?
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
yeah, doing much more meters than the guys below
broerie - February 18, 2012
its the sheer power
as well as carrying the speed that is just almost beyond belief
andrewp - February 18, 2012
I think it's often done
It can be safer to be high, so you don’t get boxed in
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Scrap the omnium and bring back the madison.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
+1000
broerie - February 18, 2012
Amen, brother.
Ruthann - February 18, 2012
the event is pretty much the equivalent of the clowns in a circus.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Lots of makeup and kind of scary?
Ruthann - February 18, 2012
while we are waiting for the main acts
Uphill - February 18, 2012
No, keep the omnium, and ADD the madison!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
+1
and the points race and the IP
When you spend 10Mill building a venue, at least let some medals be won in it.
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Indeed!
Especially when swimmers can win something like 15 medals each!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Keirin final
1. Chris Hoy (GB)
2. Rene Enders (ERD)
3. Mickael Bourgain (Fra)
4. Teun Mulder (Ned)
5. Kazunari Watanabe (Jpn)
6. Simon Van Velthooven (NZL)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
ooow, close
broerie - February 18, 2012
brave riding by Lee
broerie - February 18, 2012
Pendleton looked the wrong way & nearly missed Lee jump!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
The camera work is very good, isn't it? A moving camera on the inside,
and some mounted on the bikes…plus the stationary cameras and the slo-mo.
Ruthann - February 18, 2012
LOVE Meares' stares at her opponents as she lines up!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
reverse seahorse!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Yup, beeb doing a fantastic job
broerie - February 18, 2012
and on those strange things you steer with your knees
for the low first-lap shots!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Segway
broerie - February 18, 2012
What a surprise there
broerie - February 18, 2012
Gou?
Uphill - February 18, 2012
yep
broerie - February 18, 2012
Guo
as per Sarah below
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Hugh Porter may keep saying "Gao Shang"
but her name is Shuang Guo…
(When gs and Ted are ranting about that Dutch/Flemish commentator? That’s me, now!)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
always difficult with Asian athletes apparently the tennis player is called Li Na (Belgian commentators have called her Na Li for years)
broerie - February 18, 2012
Porter has commentated track for CENTURIES, and it's clear on the startlists,
I think he just doesn’t care – he mangles names all over
(gnashing my teeth, tearing my hair & generally wishing he’d retire!)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
he is the kind of guy who demands Bangers and Mash when travelling to Morocco
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Usual practice in chinese is to say family name first, then given name...
…so it gets reversed a lot.
Li Fuyu is a good example. How it gets said depends on whether one is using the Chinese word order or the English, French, etc. one.
Ed K - February 18, 2012
I love Hoy as a person
eloquent, smart, enthusiastic. Nice interviewee.
broerie - February 18, 2012
and he looks the interviewer in the eyes
broerie - February 18, 2012
his name is Sir Hoy ffs
Uphill - February 18, 2012
sorry
broerie - February 18, 2012
Its Sir Chris technically :)
andrewp - February 18, 2012
I'll call him "the big fella" just to be safe
broerie - February 18, 2012
wise move
(though in my experience most people with “titles” dont really care that much)
andrewp - February 18, 2012
I find it weird to use titles when they're actually racing etc
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
The guy will be Lord if he wins a couple of gold medals in London come summer
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Enders needs to do more leg work in the gym
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Rene Enders has nearly as big thighs as Robert Förstermann
RF’s thighs!!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
There's a dude who is on the track support for Belarus
who always has this stinky-looking leather waistcoat and usually terrible shirts – Albertina and I were laughing at his 70s lounge lizard shirts at Manc last year, but he seems to be plain this year – but at least the leather’s still there!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
OK, Vicky, remember to watch her, this time!
She should take this one easily!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Go Vicky!
(or does she have a title too?)
broerie - February 18, 2012
well, Hugh Porter thinks she's called "Queen Victoria"! ;-D
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Yep
V Pemdleton MBE ( i think)
andrewp - February 18, 2012
That isn't a title
She has an award, but she’s just called Vicky.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
fair point well made
(but it is missing on the start lists, just like the Sir is)
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Probably a BBC policy in some way
I know that the various titles in racing aren’t used (Sir Henry Cecil, Lord Grimthorpe etc).
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
horse racing is one of the few sports sir/lord does get used offically
the class system is intact and well there.
Official UCI registered name is Chris Hoy. Cav, Wiggo the rest are all “honoured” but not in common usage.
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Pendle running out of power?
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Think she's underestimating Lee
Like when Hoy got beaten by that young Irish guy, Felix English??
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
was the really his name?
Uphill - February 18, 2012
yep - it was, too, can't believe I remembered it!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Jeez Vicky...
broerie - February 18, 2012
WOW!
Lee is on fire! I’ve never seen her so strong – I was surprised at all the riders she’s beaten to get to the finals – she’s really come on!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
ping
Jens - February 18, 2012
Gimme 5 mins til the sprint is over - SUPER EXCITED!!!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Big leg coming up now
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Oooh, FIERCE look from Anna!
scorching Guo!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Dominant win
GUO!!!!!!
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Fantastic win
Is this levls of fitness, or is Guo just improving?
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
maybe the Pendle battle took some out of Mears.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
She's beaten Meares before
Think she was injured last year? But yeah, found her form big time
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Chinese athletes performing better than ever
this must be anb olympic year
broerie - February 18, 2012
Blimey! I really expected Anna to win that one
but another amazing race!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
The dwarf
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Haha, you can hear the excitemen in Kings voice
I love to see such passion
broerie - February 18, 2012
She's a really, really smiley rider in real life, too!
Huge grin!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Where in London are we?
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Stratford - on the east side
20 mins train/tube from Liverpool Street – used to be a big industrial/poor area
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Used to live near London, still can't place it in the head.
will look at a map later
Uphill - February 18, 2012
On the canal, I think
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
I am trying to think of a corp nearby.
Thats unfortunately the way its divided in my head
Uphill - February 18, 2012
is near the far right hand side
of the red line on the tube map
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Main Olympic Park
Stratford, if that helps you. About 5 miles east of centre otherwise.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
I love individual pursuits
Lactic acid ftw!
broerie - February 18, 2012
Wow, that's a fast start!
broerie - February 18, 2012
Amy Cure (Aus) wins IP bronze over Sereikaite
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Blimey, this is tense.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Atta girl!!!
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Wherever Rowsell found that from
she should bottle it, and use again
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Bloody hell, it was amazing!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Amazing ride
At km 2 I thought she was done, but that last km was phenomenal
broerie - February 18, 2012
I know!
I really thought Shanks had it – AMAZING ride!!!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Love hearing how happy Dani is!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
+1
broerie - February 18, 2012
Last race for sprint bronze!
Go Vicky!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
she'll have to watch out
broerie - February 18, 2012
Buisness end for Bronze
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Dominant win
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Indeed
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Phew, what an accelleration by Lee
broerie - February 18, 2012
Dead impressive
You could park a van in the gap between them at the end.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
small 18 wheeler
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Bloody hell! I was not expecting that!
Wai Sze Lee beats Vicky Pendleton for sprint bronze!
Unexpected final time!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Rowsell: lovely eyes
broerie - February 18, 2012
Jo Rowsell has alopecia, which is why not much hair
A few years back, she would always wear a wig when not helmeted – it’s been great seeing her confident in herself & not bothering, these last years. She comes across as really pretty, & nice, & sure of herself!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
ah, I thought it was a fashion statement
It suits her well
broerie - February 18, 2012
She does charity work for charities that support people with alopecia, too
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
It is great to see
Hope she can inspire some of the many sufferers this year.
With Sarah Storey as well (until very recently), it is very difficult not to admire the women’s track team.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
The TP team is stupidly strong
It’ll be so interesting to see which final 3 they choose for the Olympics
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
is my favourite GB trackie
for many reasons, that included.
One day, when Oly focus done with, will make a very impressive road racer.
andrewp - February 18, 2012
She always gets fun results in the criteriums she races over summer
And both she & Dani King will win a few vds points in the British races (prob not riding any Euro ones, so it’s be ONLY the Brit ones!)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
DS Stef
and others deserve a lot more praise than they receive for how they have looked after the some of the GB trackies during the off season
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Yes indeed!
It’s fun, with Dani and Jo both being Matrix (Horizon) riders!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Ultimately any success
is as much theirs as GB cycling’s. They should be very proud of both named riders and others
andrewp - February 18, 2012
I am one of the very few omnium fans
but I wish they wouldn’t end it with the kilo TT. So dull! So long! I wish they’d show the women’s elimination first, at least! End the omnium with a nice scratch, or points!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Wow I knew Viviani was in shape, but this was really impressive
broerie - February 18, 2012
viviani
danger man
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Pretty lousy omnium so far by Gijs Van Hoecke
broerie - February 18, 2012
disaster for Hester.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
yeah, but he's had a good 6day season
Van Hoecke is focussing only on the omniums this year
broerie - February 18, 2012
too much partying after Copenhagen
Waste now.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Bryan Coquard is sitting in 4th for you, though!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
(French)
broerie - February 18, 2012
Is he? OOOOPS!!!!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
It's nice to hear Dani bigging up the omnium
It was really annoying me last night, when the commentators were being so rude about it, comparing it to the circus etc. We only get cycling on the BBC a couple of times a year, they really should be doing everything to promote it, not spending ages whining about things that can’t be changed this year
(Although as someone tweeted earlier, funny how they suddenly started liking it, when Swift started moving up the rankings!)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
I have nothing against the omnium, but I hate the fact they cut the madison and points race from the Olympic programme.
broerie - February 18, 2012
Oh, me too
I’d have madison, points & elimination, in my ideal world – but the commentators (& lots of Brit cycling media) present it as IP v omnium, rather than point out we should have more events – or worse, like last night, blame the fact there needed to be equality between women & men for losing the IP…
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
You do get the feeling that she'd find something nice to say
About dry rot, or boils. I don’t think she’s stopped smiling since she came on screen. NTTAWWT.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
You can always tell which one she is by her MASSIVE smile
and for a soppy moment, this pic of her after winning the TP yesterday – aw!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
oooh, lovely
broerie - February 18, 2012
Can you spot Dani?
and very happy British TP team!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Nice
broerie - February 18, 2012
Well, they deserve to be happy
It is nice to see/hear their pleasure, though. Very easy to share their joy if they show it so obviously.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
That's one of the major reasons I'm such a Marianne Vos fangirl!
It’s been interesting, comparing Dani’s commentary here with Emma Trott at the Worlds RR. I know Trott had the harder job, but both Dani’s happiness/enthusiasm and Emma’s boredom/disdain were infectious… I’ve always wanted Helen Wyman to commentate the women’s RRs, and now I’m upgrading that to Helen + Dani!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Interesting in the context of your comments about Pendleton, too
Dani seems to me to be very feminine, in the most positive sense of the term, without needing to tell us that she is. Whereas Pendleton in some ways comes across as, arguably, more like some male athletes – and as a result, she does feel the need to tell us she’s a girly girl – and ends up in FHM.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
It's like some of the young Brit riders, always making "gay" jokes on twitter
that just make them seem completely insecure in themselves, and not the “manly” men they want to seem.
(Of course, the homophobia & stuff is in a whole other league to Pendleton’s interviews – probably shouldn’t even have them in the same sentence)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
I guess both come from trying to figure yourself out in a very public way. Twitter really isn’t helpful under those circumstances.
I’m very glad I grew up in total obscurity!
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
I think it's also the need, in Vicky's case, for the media to have a "hook"
so now, every time anyone interviews her, they use the same old narrative, as it’s easier (and also, I guess, a bit more interesting than “I really love riding, so I do it a lot!”, if you’re not a full-time fan!)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Don't like the omnium. I would still cut it.
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Amazing K by Kluge
broerie - February 18, 2012
Wow; the Polish guy blew the others away!
tiny gear ftw!
broerie - February 18, 2012
Good ride by the Polish guy
Uphill - February 18, 2012
Viviani is going to be lethal
Once he’s gone through puberty.
(Hoping Albertina doesn’t read this on the way home…)
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
she likes them very young and fresh
Uphill - February 18, 2012
very strong Cocqard too
broerie - February 18, 2012
Bell! mo jongens toch!
broerie - February 18, 2012
She's read it in the velodrome! Ha!
Albertina - February 18, 2012 via mobile
People watching on streams/BBC2
I have to warn you, it goes off BBC2 in 10 mins, apparently – if you want to watch the women’s omnium elimination, Brits you’ll have to switch to red button or http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/17012358
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
bah
broerie - February 18, 2012
I feel the need to apologise
Tomorrow we’re on BBC2 from 14:45, and Eurosport from 15:00, so there should be a lot of streams, hopefully of the whole second session
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
O/T
just followed you on twitter, can you please follow back so can send DM
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Done!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Bell very strong
Uphill - February 18, 2012
4th for my Vivi...if only he hadn't missed the flipping move in the scratch! Bah.
Albertina - February 18, 2012 via mobile
Thoughts on the stadium?
Is it as noisy as it seems?
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
and how does it compare to Manchester?
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Oooh, Meares interview!!!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Why the heck have we built a track to suit her?! Fail!
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Hahaha!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
says
she’s really, really pleased with how she raced
loves the velodrome, suits her racing style, says the crowd is fantastic, she’s never heard as much noise, reflective of a country that loves its sports
says she’ll have home-crowd advantage in Melbourne, but it’ll be flipped again for the Olympics
said this season has been the most uncertain, with no 1 rider being dominant – thinks it’s great, more challenge, more competition for her
Basically, she’s lovely!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Did you know she even pipped Cuddles for Cyclist of the Year voted for by Oz GP?
Seahorse - February 18, 2012
Deserves it!
Sarah Connolly - February 19, 2012
I agree. what is so heartening is that the Australian public know that too, and Cuddles of course was very
happy for her, which was lovely.
Seahorse - February 19, 2012
She's such a positive, happy soul - especiallya fter breaking her back a few years ago
It’s always fun, comparing how Vicky P talks about Anna (Vicky really bigs up how she felt that Meares used to “bully” her, years & years ago) and how Anna talks about VP (always talks about her as a great rider, her best opponent etc etc!)
Really hope they aren’t drawn to meet except in the finals, for the Worlds & Olympics!
Sarah Connolly - February 19, 2012
Anyone want any updates on the women's elimination, if you can't watch it?
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Having waved my feminist credentials around
I’m a huge fan of Sofia Arreola. Beautiful and talented. Phwoar.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Ha!
She’s a really sweet person too – Nancy Arreola (ex-Horizon rider and sometime PdC correspondent) is her big sister
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Yeah, I enjoy reading Nancy's stuff (and pics)
Good to know Sofia is as lovely as she looks. Would get the “Emma Fahlin pick” if there was a Track PSA-DS-W.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Bah, Sofi's just been eliminated!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
+ Bah.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
ELIMINATION!
Kirsten Wild, Kirsten Wild, rah rah rah!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Yumari Gonzalez's tactic of riding at the back freaks me out!
Yikes Yumari! Be careful!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Charlotte Becker just eliminated
(2 of the 3 German Pursuit riders are on Specialized-lululemon – Becker & Lisa Brennauer)
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
I ADORE the elimination!
Laura Trott getting the crowd worked up by racing at the back, and having to sprint hard EVERY elimination round!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
She's riding better and better
Seems happier in a smaller field?
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Indeed, but still at the back!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Surprised Sarah Hammer's out! and Olaberria We're left with
Tara Whitten, Kirsten Wild, Pascale Jeluand, Laura Trott, Jo Kiesenowski & Nettie Edmondson!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Crowd are loving it
Hope Albertina has some voice left for singing in church tomorrow…
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
I was shrieking on my sofa!
I’m a huge fan of Whitten & Wild too! Perfect end!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Blimey, amazed Trott's continual sprint is working!!
Whitten, Wild & Trott left!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
and OMG, she beat Wild????
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
GO ON GIRL
Once more.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Chris Boardman just became a fanboy
Pundits aren’t supposed to shout “YES!” like that.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Not just homerism
But this may be one of the best velodromes ever built, particularly for the fans.
Superb looking facility. Friends there tonight are raving about it.
andrewp - February 18, 2012
Anna Meares was saying she thinks they've done something to the acoustics to amplify the crowds!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Women's omnium after 3 races
1. Nettie Edmondson (Aus) 16 points
2. Tara Whitten (Can) 17
3. Laura Trott (GBr) 20
4. Kirsten Wild (Ned) 20
5. Sarah Hammer (USA) 20
6. Ausrine Trebaite (LTU) 25
3 to go!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Fabulous night! So much fun!
Tomorrow we kick off from 14:45 – see you all then, I hope!
Sarah Connolly - February 18, 2012
Middle class problems
Depends how quickly I can get back from John Lewis with a replacement coffee grinder. Hope to catch as much of this as possible.
EdredonBrowny - February 18, 2012
Haha, that is HILARIOUS!
I’m laughing out loud, I love it!
