Women's Tour of Qatar: Camels, Crosswinds, and How To Pack

The GreenEdge women show us how to - and how not to - pack for the Tour of Qatar. I like how Tiffany Cromwell almost keeps a straight face at the end. But not quite.

The women's Tour of Qatar starts tomorrow on 1 February. Cyclingfever has your startlist, which includes a mix of trade and national teams. This race is typically a sprint and cross-wind fest.

A few notable names: Giorgia Bronzini (Diaora-Pasta Zara), Chloe Hosking (Specialized-lululemon), Kirsten Wild (Netherlands), Shelley Olds and Coryn Rivera (U.S.), Judith Arndt (GreenEdge), Tatiana Guderzo and Marta Bastianelli (MCipollini), and Noemi Cantele (Italy).

Also, there will be camels.

I had to surf to the about section of their website

to remind myself why I disliked them. That’s how cute that video is. Also, great nailpolish colours there.

The fact that they've got it together to have a women's team

makes me dislike them a lot less.

Ha!

Right. I hear ya. You know, what I really liked about it, though, is that it shows just how easy it can be to promote a women’s team. Take a few minutes, do up a funny video, post it. Done! Hey! Look! We’re women who race bikes for GreenEdge.

Zomg, that was so hard.

But, but, but...

Women! Hard! Confusing! FEEEELINGS!

Qatar is the one race of the year you really want to pack big for

Coryn Rivera posted a couple of little videos from her hotel room last year, and there was no arguing about who gets to sleep on top (or even in the middle sometimes).

The site drives me a little crazy, but the team photos are fantastic. The one of Jack Bobridge is a 10/10...

I like that so far, GE can laugh at themselves.

This video & the Beyond the Peloton Series are . . .

. . . exactly how a team, and riders, add value to themselves as well as their sponsors.

This is not rocket science.
It does not take a lot of money, or extra infrastructure.
There is no excuse why every major team is not doing this right now.

I hope these ladies continue this throughout the year as it is always great to see.

+1

two days ago, i couldn’t give a shit about greenedge, this video later, i now like their women’s team. amazing how a little humor/access works.

The guy who is 'ozzylcing.com' (Dan Jones), is the video man. Whilst he can do serious, he does humour really well.

I’m sure there’ll be serious stuff on the site, but Dan does humour coupled with cycling best.

Fun.

A fun video. Ryan is right.

Jackson Stewart, Team USA DS, is live tweeting from the race
Worrack, hosking, wild, Arndt, Rhodes in lead 7. 1:45 back chase of 12.

you can follow him here

That’s 2 Lulus, 2 GEs, and Wild from AA – looks like it’ll be a fun season!

(I always like Qatar for Iris Slappendel’s quote a few years ago – something like “If you swap the sand for grass, and the camels for cows, it’s just like racing at home!” – Dutch-style sprinting, crazy winds, yay!)

at 20 km to go, there's a group of 7

Judith Arndt, Loes Gunnewijk, Alexis Rhodes (GreenEdge), Ellen van Dijk, Chloe Hosking, Trixi Worrack (Specialized lululemon) & Kirsten Wild (AA Drink-Leontien.nl) – 12 chasers at 1 min

Kirsten Wild wins stage 1!
Fairly horrible stage, too

Lots of wind and sand.

It's always that way - there are usually some horrible crashes in this race

but even without them, it’s non-stop wind, full of sand – sandblasting!

Maybe this is the start of a better year for her

It must be reassuring to beat Chloe even without a leadout of her own, so wait till they get that silly strong train going.

Relieved that Bronzini is ok after her crash.
She vastly overstates

The number of camels here.

Greenedge video reactions from Stage 1

I like Judith Arndt’s comment – "The day started good with a nice breakfast, but then it only got worse!" Made me laugh, especially as she was laughing too!

Judging by the scene outside my window

The wind and sand should be even worse today.
