Good morning
Where is everyone?
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Finally! I've been waiting for this thread for the last 20 minutes
Vlaanderen90 - January 29, 2012
Sorry
I’m used to the mudnuts taking care of this but they all seem to be off galavanting in Belgium for some reason
Jens - January 29, 2012
Ready to go
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Mornin' all.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Good morning, everyone. Coffee's ready to go, just in time for the race, mmmm.
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
PS - Go Katie!!!
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
I have a new coffee machine
just in time
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Morning Ruthann
you’re nuts
Jens - January 29, 2012
Hey, it's the weekend, I can take a nap later this morning. :-)
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
morning all
61000 people today at koksijde
just confirmed
geert - January 29, 2012
Weird not seeing Kupfernagel here
Vlaanderen90 - January 29, 2012
Or PFP
I never heard why
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
MTB focus I think
Jens - January 29, 2012
Yeah, the World Cup got kicked up a few weeks this year
Vlaanderen90 - January 29, 2012
She thought that she was so crap on sand
it wasn’t worth the time
Monty. - January 29, 2012
Chose not to, it seems
Sarah Connolly - January 29, 2012
Important info
Most of the tracks (ruts) seem to have vanished, probably because of spectators walking on the course yesterday afternoon. Will take a lot of power to make new tracks for the front rider. May be advantageous to take a back seat for a couple of laps.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Lucie hasn't quite got her game face / nonchalant look worked out
for the camera
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Wyman with the hole shot
Vlaanderen90 - January 29, 2012
Who's the other Brit
in about 5th?
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Harris
Jens - January 29, 2012
De Boer - Badass
Jens - January 29, 2012
Mani is here as well
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Plus first race back for Van Paassen
after a lengthy respiratory infection.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
She stood next to us for the men's race
in the middle of the crowd. Looked like she was having fun.
tgsgirl - January 30, 2012
Compton...shit
Vlaanderen90 - January 29, 2012
Good grief
About 7 Dutch in top 10?
straw dog - January 29, 2012
So, this is the Dutch Open Championships?
TheFigurehead - January 29, 2012
If it was Open, there'd be about 25 of them here, I guess
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Well Compton is all ready out of it...this could be a Dutch sweep
Vlaanderen90 - January 29, 2012
Looks like Helen is about in 5-6th place, go Helen!
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
Vos solo.....
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Is this going to be a repeat of last week, we wonder?
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Don't think so
Previous two races showed that there’s a lot of opportunity to come back, mainly because the first rider has to make fresh tracks.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Although..
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Helen with some awkward dismounts
Jens - January 29, 2012
Shame, she made a lovely start.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Not looking comfy in the sand
Jens - January 29, 2012
She said she's been working on her starts
it shows.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Vos stoppd to build sandcastle...
…resumes lead
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Ha!
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
and Cant can't ride the sand
Vlaanderen90 - January 29, 2012
Well,
she is supposed to be about the second most technical rider behind Daphny VDB. Cant is probably being held up in traffic right now.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
She fell down in one of the corners trying to power through it
Vlaanderen90 - January 29, 2012
Oh right, missed that
Thought you might be talking about that uphill mishap from her, that was behind another rider who dismounted.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
11 seconds to DvdB
Jens - January 29, 2012
New competition: how many secs will Vos win by?
My guess: 67s
Uphill - January 29, 2012
I'm going for 2m 4s
straw dog - January 29, 2012
so no more playing with the sand.
Uphill - January 29, 2012
She has her game face on now
straw dog - January 29, 2012
has she ever tanked in a race?
anybody with info?
Uphill - January 29, 2012
Vos showing her Vossomeness. Wow.
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
3 Van Paassen
4 Cant
5 De Boer
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Nash overtaking a bunch of them
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
good battle
Uphill - January 29, 2012
Five laps in total
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Three to go at next finish crossing
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Back on the wifi
Let’s see how the stream works this morning :D
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
If your wifi is a factor
you need a new wifi, or a range extender
straw dog - January 29, 2012
I dunno
Just yesterday the stream seemed unusually strong on my wired connection.
Seems strong today too
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Those grey tyres
look rather classy.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
"Pipistrello"
diamant profile (very low knobbies in square arrangement, more or less slick)
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
...and named after a kind of bat.
Win-win.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
http://www.thorneproducts.com/index.php/tires/cross-tires
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
+21 sec for DVDB
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Compton back in the race for a medal now
Jens - January 29, 2012
So it's pretty much all over as far as the top (two?) step(s?) of the podium go(es?), isn't it?
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
You never know
Things can change. Don’t see Vos losing out here though!
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
No. VDB is under pressure.
blackswangreen - January 29, 2012
VDB is the gal in second position I presume?
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Yep
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
With the blonde, Heidi-style plaits.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Pippi Longstocking
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Albertina and I were wearing our hair in plaits as a tribute to Daphny today!
Sarah Connolly - January 29, 2012
Daphny van den Brand
(my photo)
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
And they caught her
Yeah, I wouldn’t have known to expect that ;\
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Cant on the ride of the season now
Jens - January 29, 2012
Vos playing a bit a again.
she might be human. just maybe.
Uphill - January 29, 2012
Possible Albertina sighting just there.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Why is Vos looking behind her?
“Holy crap I’m ahead by this much!” ??
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Brave ride by Cant but she looks to be tirig
Jens - January 29, 2012
The crowd must've pushed her on some
she got huge cheers
tgsgirl - January 30, 2012
Ouch British rider taking a tumble
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Helen Wyman, they said
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
No! Helen!
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
CX is so demoralising
if you’re not winning
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Ooff
TheFigurehead - January 29, 2012
Strong response by Compton.
Chapeau.
Uphill - January 29, 2012
But paying for the race back it seems
Jens - January 29, 2012
yeah, probably.
.
Uphill - January 29, 2012
So second group is
VdB, Cant, Nash, Van Paassen
Compton chasing
I think?
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Yes
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
where'd Nash go?
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Woops, sorry,
yes, Nash in the 2nd group with De Boer and Harris and 1 or 2 others
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Perhaps Compton chased back too fast, earlier
seems to be going back now
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Her husband Mark Legg confirms
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Why did she have to chase from the very back of the race?
Crash?
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Yep
on the 2nd corner or so.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
is this a 1 hour (or so) race today?
Uphill - January 29, 2012
40 min
Jens - January 29, 2012
30 for Vos at this rate
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Dutchies looking strong for 1-2-3
Cant struggling to hang on (or sandbagging)
attackagain! - January 29, 2012
Looks like Wyman close behind Compton?
straw dog - January 29, 2012
maybe not, could have been cutaway to further back
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Last lap
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Cheering for Cant here
but she is in all kinds of pain
Jens - January 29, 2012
Compton with group 2
and that is Wyman in 6th, I’m sure
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Harris not Wyman
geert - January 29, 2012
ah that makes more sense thanks
straw dog - January 29, 2012
My quads hurt just looking at that sand hill
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
My beer belly hurts looking at the beer tent.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
It was a nightmare just to walk up the side of it!
You know how sometimes you think maybe things look harder on tv than they are in real life? It’s NOT like that!
Sarah Connolly - January 29, 2012
Go go go
Jens - January 29, 2012
Go go go
Jens - January 29, 2012
Compton going backwards :(
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
I think she went into red to catch
then had nothing when they accelerated
straw dog - January 29, 2012
So this is going to be what? Vos' 16th consecutive win?
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
VDS price: 111
Uphill - January 29, 2012
151?
straw dog - January 29, 2012
and 5th cyclocross world championship title
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Cant is tough
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Come on Cant......
Go for it.
Uphill - January 29, 2012
Fantastic race again
straw dog - January 29, 2012
+1
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
the non-Vos class is more exciting
TheFigurehead - January 29, 2012
+1
one just have to accept we have a race within the race.
Uphill - January 29, 2012
Jesus, just staying upright on that sandhill would be a chore
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Loving Cant
Jens - January 29, 2012
That the Belgian?
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Slick move in the corner, there.
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
She doesn't even look the slightest bit fatigued
Amazing
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
She's a machine.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Congratulation with the win, Vos.
What a great Champion.
Uphill - January 29, 2012
straw dog - January 29, 2012
+1
Uphill - January 29, 2012
+2 Chapeau.
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
Amazing race by Van Paassen after such a long illness
what, 2 months?
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Pity that Pippi outsprinted her
but that was a very cool ride for Belgium
Jens - January 29, 2012
Was that a strong result?
I couldn’t really read her expression upon crossing the finish line. She was…animated…about something, but if it was being beaten for silver, well, she basically led out the Dutch girl like a teammate.
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Or was she happy to get bronze?
Hence my question of was it a strong result
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Very happy about bronze
about being on the podium, mainly.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Crazy pleased with a medal
Punching a bit above her weight. She doesn’t have many podiums before
Jens - January 29, 2012
Aw, then this is a wonderful result for her! Excellent.
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
Yes, and this year her results have been less good than last year
(with a caveat that since Koksijde World cup, Vos has won pretty much everything, Daphny has been getting every other podium place, so there’s not been much to fight for!)
Sarah Connolly - January 29, 2012
It was fun
the entire crowd let out a disappointed wail, and she was cheering from happiness. That Vos – Daphne battle must’ve converted thousands and thousands of Flemish people to women’s cyclocross by the way.
tgsgirl - January 30, 2012
Vos-Daphne?
That was over in seconds. The Cant
Daphne(van Paasen) battle was much better (on TV anyway)Jens - January 30, 2012
Uh, yes
Cant-Daphne battle. That’s what I meant. Must’ve gotten confused cause of the commentator who failed at properly pronouncing any of the name. Seh-nee Can’t is attacking!
tgsgirl - January 30, 2012
(Daphny)
tedvdw - January 30, 2012
(sorry)
tgsgirl - January 30, 2012
Certainly not a common name.
tedvdw - January 30, 2012
She really had every reason to cheer even if she got outsprinted
DvdB was clearly the fresher rider and yet Cant kept coming back and putting her in trouble. She managed to get rid of van Paasen after that sneaky inside line coming in to the last hill and sandsection and she almost got a gap on DvdB too. Bronze was brilliant.
Jens - January 30, 2012
Yeah, it was
But the immediate responses differed a lot. The crowd really got into that battle in the last lap, oh-ing and ah-ing and cheering while watching the big screen.
tgsgirl - January 30, 2012
Yeah, immediate response will always be that
I felt the same at home since she came so close, but it went away pretty soon. Silver/bronze isn’t huge difference. Medal was the thing.
Jens - January 30, 2012
I was laughing when he got to "Sunny"
and as for the pronunciation of her surname…. well, a polite lady like myself couldn’t tell you what it sounded like at one point…. Richard Fries, all about the unintended laughs!
Sarah Connolly - January 30, 2012
I do think there should be a special prize
for anyone who pulls a 720 tailwhip off the ramp, though.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
New record for Vos:
5 cyclocross world titles.
blackswangreen - January 29, 2012
Commentator: SuperFrau!
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
Supervrouw ;)
blackswangreen - January 29, 2012
Deutsch, Dutch, it's all the same
;)
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
TY :-)
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
Lyne sighting at the finish line I think
Jens - January 29, 2012
So who's the favorite in the men's race?
Štybar?
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Sven
geert - January 29, 2012
I think it's very open.
Sven slight favorite, but any one of the four.
straw dog - January 29, 2012
The four...?
Don’t assume I know anything :p
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Nys, Stybar, Pauwels and Albert
I know marginally more than nothing, but Koksijde is great fun
attackagain! - January 29, 2012
Sven Nys
Niels Albert
Kevin ¨Pauwels
Stybar
geert - January 29, 2012
It may mean that the exciting racing is for second at the moment
but she’s great for women’s cycling.
Everyone’s talking about her, including people who aren’t usually interested in the women’s sport.
You need someone like this once in a while to inspire a new generation of riders.
straw dog - January 29, 2012
+1
She’s so super-strong, and such a great personality – ecstatic about winning, and riding, having fun on the bike, pushing herself and the sport….
Sarah Connolly - January 29, 2012
Interviewer
“Congrats on your 4th title” – 5th
“Are you killing the sport?” – no
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
“You lost the road worlds” – yes
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
did they say Carpani was the interviewer?
Jens - January 29, 2012
Yep
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
That would explain a lot
TheFigurehead - January 29, 2012
Yeah, nice guy.
What’s the first question you ask after someone has just become world champion?
blackswangreen - January 29, 2012
He seemed to be having trouble finding his words
Conversational in English, but not fluent, I’d say.
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
facepalm!
She’s never come less than second in the Road World Champs!!!!!!!!!
(really hope she does the roads Olympic-Worlds double this year!)
Sarah Connolly - January 29, 2012
Albert, early injury ------> World Champ
Emma J, early injury————>
You do the math.
Jens - January 29, 2012
hmm, slightly less mud in Emma's future, I predict!
Sarah Connolly - January 29, 2012
Seriously, killing the sport, what a stupid thing to say to her after winning the WC!
Ruthann - January 29, 2012
Well, I see what he means, but come on.
blackswangreen - January 29, 2012
time and a place for everything....
Jens - January 29, 2012
Wyman on Vos:
“Despite missing two rounds, [she] has shown that she’s pretty much the standard setter for us all and we all need to raise our games.”
That’s got to be good for women’s CX, even if she’s risking the Lance Effect.
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
Interviewer: “Katie Compton, championship was over before it began, eh?”
John Cyclopunk - January 29, 2012
What calling a UCI official stupid?
geert - January 29, 2012
unpossible
Jens - January 29, 2012
hmmm, wonder if they say that to Sven Nys?
Or Styby, when he was super-dominant the last 2 seasons…
Sarah Connolly - January 29, 2012
straw dog - January 29, 2012
They should really get a different version of our anthem.
Terrible. And I’ve heard it three times now ;)
blackswangreen - January 29, 2012
Yes!
Strangely tweaked.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
hmmpf
geert - January 29, 2012
At least you heard yours
the Belgian anthem was set to a strangely low volume
tgsgirl - January 30, 2012
straw dog - January 29, 2012
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Compton sounds like she's still completely blown up
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
Fighting tears, no doubt
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
She just doesn't have it this year.
She’s never been great technically, but lately it’s just terrible. In pure power she’s probably the greatest of them all.
blackswangreen - January 29, 2012
So how come there's no juniors or U23 women?
Lack of participants?
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
That's the UCI's stance, yes
Might be something to it. Would be a complete Holland/Belgium fest.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Belgium coach in the Sporza studio
is that this guy?
Jens - January 29, 2012
Hehe
Rudy De Bie. Older brother of Danny, former world champ.
tedvdw - January 29, 2012
Time for some winter riding
If I’m not back by the men’s race I probably slipped on some black ice and lie in a ditch somewhere.
Jens - January 29, 2012
Careful!
The PdC search and rescue helicopters are tied up with a coffee bean airlift to the West Coast.
straw dog - January 29, 2012
Hmm
I’d take a road trip for the road WC, or even if it was a more interesting city, but…Louisville? Pass.
Aly Edge - January 29, 2012
