yet. The investigation concentrates on the supplement manufacturer, who did boast (as ‘slappe’ on a Dutch-language forum) about being able to get Wellens a top 4 at Essen where, lo and behold, he won.
I've been following the Concap debate on WT.be for a while
The guy (Slappe) definitely has a dirty past, and (as you may have read) he’s got a lot of enemies too. As long as there’s no evidence against Wellens, I like to believe that this is just one of his enemies trying to hurt Slappe.
The police investigation started when someone tipped the Wellens was buying stuff from Slappe, that’s all they got for now.
I have always had my doubts about 2003/2004, the years when Wellens dominated the CX field, but the past years we haven’t really had any reasons to believe he’s doping.
if he was actually doping, the uci’s testing and passport programs would surely have noticed it and a positive would have been announced right away, leading to a suspension.
I am clinging to the "such a nice fellow couldn't possibly be a doper" thing...
but that probably just means I’m a gullible fool, unfortunately.

I wouldn't call you gullible fool for the sentiment...I think most of us want the nice guys to be clean and dicks to be cheats...
The world’s messy, though. Sometimes the dicks are clean and the nice guys are dirty.

He's not a suspect

Can't say I fell down the chair.
Oh well, I am now seaching for another CX rider to support.
Uphill - January 26, 2012
Not the least bit of proof yet
broerie - January 26, 2012
I hear you, but I have decided to take him out of my active support circle (fwiw).
It happens quite a bit with riders I like.
Uphill - January 26, 2012
love the game, not the players
is my motto. trust no one is another. so sad.
ant1 - January 26, 2012
I am at least relieved that this stems from more than just his illness,
because I would prefer a few dopers going uncaught to suspicion and harassment befalling every rider who is taken suddenly and mysteriously ill.
paisley - January 26, 2012
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
That is all
Drew Davis - January 26, 2012
nothing to worry about

ant1 - January 26, 2012
so
were you able to write that all at once? Surely you had to take a couple breaks to try and get the hysterical laughter under control…
jsallee00 - January 26, 2012
unfortunately
i have a lot of experience writing this kind of crap. it’s second nature now.
ant1 - January 26, 2012
the passport snark
works better in a mens road racing context – as only applies there, as they pony up for it. N/a all other sectors of cycling.
andrewp - January 26, 2012
snark cares not for facts.
but thanks, i did not know that.
ant1 - January 26, 2012
New reports indicate that Wellens' health problems were caused by dental infection.
I hope that quells some of the suspicion directed toward him.
paisley - January 28, 2012
Also in that story, he still has only 31% liver function - that can't be good.
straw dog - January 28, 2012
Have you seen the alcohol % in Belgian beer?
31% liver function has to be about the national average
Jens - January 28, 2012
Must make life hell for all those poor tooth bacteriae
Monty. - January 29, 2012
My liver is 31% bigger than a normal one
