so i don’t know – you can climb col d’eze any number of ways. Like people have mentioned, it’s no big deal. But should be fun to finish with a short uphill TT like that. Also the stages before look promising. Mende, Sisteron.
If that is the profile corresponding to the route that will be used, then i know that climb really well. It starts at the beginning of the grande corniche in the east of Nice (about 5 mins by bike from where i live) and just follows it all the way to the col d’eze. The profile i guess says it all. I would add there are quite a lot of steeper sections (lots of 9 and 10 and some up to 12) in the first red part. The second red section is a little steeper (mostly 8%) and i guess a little shorter than a km. The blue section right before the red i think is even less steep than the average mentioned there.
All that being said, they normally don’t arrive at les 4 Chemins from that road. They usually come up from Villefranche sur mer. Or i guess actually usually from about half-way up at the moyenne corniche.
Anyway, like i say, there’s a million ways to get up to the col d’eze. Curious to see which route they take and really looking forward to the race – will be fun to see the pros riding the same road i ride all the time. And with a TT one can actually see each one pretty well instead of just a quick whoosh, they’re gone.
Too bad they didn’t go a little higher up. They could take the road up to mont revere and add a couple hundred more meters climbing. If they used the route in the profile above and added the bit to mt revere it would be the same as a little local race put on by my club each year. But i guess not enough room up top there.
but for the reporting and such i couldn’t come close to those folks, along with several others here who also do great race reports. Does sound nice though, a couch on the roadside for the tt, heh heh.
Although not sure why it would turn up now more than before. Always been first at (French) route details. The website and twitter are a one man effort by Thomas Vergouwen who I think is a Dutchman living in France. Most website articles are French, English and Dutch!
Uhm yes, velowire.com, that’s me :-). And tedvdw is right, my real name is indeed Thomas Vergouwen and I’m indeed Dutch and living in France and trying to get all my content up on my website in English, French and Dutch (most of the time published in the order French > Dutch > English since strangely I’m now writing in French first).
I indeed changed the name of the website from paris.thover.com into velowire.com just before the Tour de France 2011 since I had the opportunity to do so, I thought the name fitted the content quite well and because I always had some difficulties in explaining why it was called like that (for pure historical reasons).
Sorry by the way for the “deeplinking not allowed” image. The thing is people are too often “stealing” my pictures which means they not only don’t respect copyrights but also steal my bandwidth which means the site might get slower for real users. That’s why deeplinked images are not shown but replaced by that image.
As you might have seen the information is no longer available on the letour.fr website since it’s now password protected. Mr Prudhomme just told me he was quite surprised it happened once again …
As for velowire.com popping up in your search results, I know it’s quite well referenced, so that explains a lot (if you set up your website correctly and if it contains enough content and is updated often enough, you mechanically end up higher in the search results). If there’s anything you’d like to see additionally on velowire.com (for example if you were frustrated for velowire.com popping up in a search result while it didn’t answer your question!), please let me know and I’ll see what I can do (“it’s your Tour” is an example of something I set up as an answer to a very often repeated request).
Just a final comment: I just subscribed to this website since I think it’s a cool community and since I saw you were talking about me. However, unfortunately I will most probably not have the time to come back often here. However, if you have any question for me, please don’t hesitate to post it on velowire.com or contact me directly!
Your site is also a nice community with lots of information and debate about the Tour de France route. Love the discussions about all the different roads and passes that should be included ! Keep up the good work !
ooooooo - like
i think.
yeehoo - January 25, 2012
i assume you're familiar with the climb
care to share some thoughts about it?
ant1 - January 25, 2012
well no details yet

i found this on the velowire site mentioned below

ha!
so much for that. It didn’t do that on the preview thing. Deeplinking eh? Ah well, you can see the profile in the link below.
yeehoo - January 26, 2012
Good sea views I assume
Willj - January 26, 2012
Nice TT in your back garden !
Willj - January 25, 2012

yeehoo - January 26, 2012
WHOA THERE GOOD BUDDY!
You don’t want to say anything you can’t take back later!
How about if you bring your couch out to the course?
ursula - January 26, 2012
If he does I'm booking tickets right now
Jens - January 26, 2012
sounds like work,
moving the couch. Those things can be heavy. Not sure the wife’s back would be up to it.
yeehoo - January 26, 2012
I am afraid that Flatty and Seahorse raised plank so high, with their TDU reporting, that noone will even try to beat that.
So, leave the couch in its place. :)
holmovka - January 26, 2012
I don't know..."Yeahoo's view from the couch" has a ring to it...
JustJoshinYa - January 26, 2012
good title
but for the reporting and such i couldn’t come close to those folks, along with several others here who also do great race reports. Does sound nice though, a couch on the roadside for the tt, heh heh.
yeehoo - January 26, 2012
I second that!
Seahorse - January 26, 2012
Are we gonna have a live webcam?
VirtKitty - January 27, 2012
Just this one time,
you could get off it before she moves it?
Just out of respect, you know.
straw dog - January 26, 2012
oh sure sure, of course
what do you take me for?
yeehoo - January 27, 2012
Mende, Nice, nice!
TheFigurehead - January 25, 2012
Need to see more details.
Uphill - January 25, 2012
Yep, even stage town links on official website are 2011

Although designed to avoid me
Willj - January 25, 2012
You'll just have to chase it this time ;-)
Drew Davis - January 25, 2012
I need a stoker ror the tandem
Willj - January 25, 2012
damn, and conta isn't scheduled to ride this
umwolverine - January 25, 2012
wait...
A time trial to Col d’Eze?!? Sounds fantastic, although a time trial in the reverse direction might be even better.
Chris Fontecchio - January 25, 2012
Wasn't this the usual finish back in the Sean Kelly days?
William H - January 26, 2012
yes
but not as a TT. When ASO took over they moved it to the prom in Nice to have more spectators.
yeehoo - January 26, 2012
why do you hate the schlecks?
ant1 - January 26, 2012
Hate the Schelcks? I thought his whole concept was that
Andy wouldn’t need a chain?
straw dog - January 26, 2012
good point.
ant1 - January 26, 2012
Andy will so wipe the floor with them...
ELVISGOAT - January 25, 2012
Andy always does
He just LOVES him some week long stage races with 2 ITTs.
ursula - January 25, 2012
You mean Andy Rooney right?
Isn’t he dead?
Jens - January 26, 2012
Zombie Andy Rooney?

It always used to be referred to as Paris-Thover when mentioned
(did they get a more official looking site?)

he changed names last year.

Willj - January 27, 2012
Unfortunately
ASO fixed their website, so the link I posted above is dead. But the velowire link has all the info ASO had, plus a screen grab of the map.
