Apparently Sophie De Boer and Caroline Mani crashed badly.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Nice ride by Annie Last, who's usually a MTBer
And OMG, more Brits than Dutchies in that top 10!!! Inconceivable!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
seemed pretty bad
:(
broerie - January 22, 2012
podium
my first
geert - January 22, 2012
Podium at a CX race...!
pablo777 - January 22, 2012
It's a lot less muddy than I had hoped
Hmpf
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Same here
I thought it was going to be a total mudfest, but other than a few boggy bits it was surprisingly dry.
John Cyclopunk - January 22, 2012
wonder if
Ron made it to the race?
geert - January 22, 2012
Probably stuck somewhere in Berchem :)
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
I hope he did!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
I made it...
More race write up coming. Jet lagged and biere lagged.
Ron... - January 22, 2012
So pleased you made it!
Yay Ron!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
OUCH OUCH
That’s a bad crash for Mani and De Boer :(
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Really, really bad
And shocking timing too – poor things
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
broken collarbone and shoulder, if my Dutch is correct?
“Sophie de Boer breekt sleutelbeen en schouder”
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
damn, she could have been close to the podium in Koksijde
broerie - January 22, 2012
So Nys would need to win, Pauwels coming 4th, to steal the season?
If I were Yoah, I’d lock myself onto Nys’ backwheel and hang on like a limpet
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
(Or would Yoah need to come 5th?)
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Yes
He has been practicisng for this moment the whole season.
straw dog - January 22, 2012
If Nys wins and Yoah is fourth
Than they’re equal on points but Nys will have one more WC victory, so Nys will take it.
If Nys is second and Yoah sixth for instance, than they’ll be equal on points and they’ll both have three WC victories, in which case we start counting second places, of which Yoah has more, so then Yoah wins the World Cup. Confusing? Nah.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
"Marianneke Cross" - heeee!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
So did Vos do enough to win the series?
Or did Daphny take it, having ridden more races?
And isn’t this Marianneke’s 15th consecutive win or something?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Daphny
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
I'm glad for Daphny!
At start of last season, she said she was quitting at the end of this one – REALLY hope that’s not true, now
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
She said in her post-race interview that it was the best possible ending to her CX career, so looks like it is.
John Cyclopunk - January 22, 2012
Albert
It’s a nice race and I like coming here, I’m in the mood for a good race. I’ve trained hard but that doesn’t mean I’ll be bad today. Maybe I can decide who wins world cup today, but the race will show that.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Peeters
Maybe I’ll hurt after yesterday but I feel good, so… I don’t really care about a podium performance today.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
He won yesterday, right?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
yes
kasteelcross at zonnebeke
geert - January 22, 2012
He also said he of course wouldn't give up on a podium spot
if it were within reach
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Aernouts
My stitches are on a non-moving part, so it doesn’t hurt and it doesn’t bother me.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Ha! That's a sweet response - very HTFU!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Non-moving part
= his permanent grin?
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Ha!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
So, it seems the WHOLE women's race was shown....
how did I miss it? Does this mean all the women’s WC races were shown, & I managed to miss them? I have serious cryface on!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
This world cup race is in the Netherlands, in North-Brabant province
same province where Vos lives (and most Dutch cyclists, really). The race was on regional TV ‘Omroep Brabant’.
(“North” Brabant despite it being a southern province in the Netherlands because there is also a southern half of Brabant but in Belgium.)
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Ahhhhhh, I see, bedankt
I should’ve guessed, really. Omroep Brabant are always good for Vos-related videos
(which makes me think maybe the whole race will turn up on-line too…)
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Hate to say it, but it was really great quality too. I had it on full screen and it was almost as good as watching on TV.
John Cyclopunk - January 22, 2012
Some clips are up
But they don’t work for me. For example the crash at the start: http://www.omroepbrabant.nl/?video/73386842/Beelden+van+de+valpartij+bij+de+start.aspx (other clips linked underneath). Might be up later at http://www.youtube.com/user/omroepbrabant/videos

Argh

tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Seems to be Windows-only
Boo!!
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Nope, I spoke too soon, sorry
Works on another Mac. Bah, may need to fix the first one.
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Meeusen
My back is lots better.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Stybar
TOO MANY INTERVIEWS
Today I will just enjoy riding in my world champs jersey. Maybe it’s my last race ever in a world champs jersey, so I’ll just enjoy it. The race isn’t as hard as I expected, lots of dry patches.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Imagine Albertina weeping into her tea
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Albertina has faith. Next week however I may be weeping into my Leffe.
Albertina - January 22, 2012 via iPhone app
They're on Pauwels now--might give you time to catch up.
majope - January 22, 2012
Ha!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Even he was answering in full sentences today
Yoah
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Svenneke
This is in between a Nys-race and a Pauwels-race. This race should suit Kevin as well. I’m motivated, but also realistic. It’ll be very, very hard. The start will be very important and you need to be off to a good start. I’ll try to start well, I’m not always good at that.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
K-Pow
This race has bits that are good for me and bits that are good for Sven. 20 points more than Nys, that’s better than 20 points less, but it’s not a less. I hope KVT has a good day so maybe he can end up ahead of Sven.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
I was wndering why there's so much orange
then I remembered where we are!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Two years ago, Stybs needed to finish before K-Pow here to win the world cup
Know what Stybar promised K-Pow is he stayed behind him? A PlayStation.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
That's cute! Did it work?
majope - January 22, 2012
Yes :)
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
In case of a tie
Nys has three wins and Pauwels… has three wins.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
oooh, most recent event was in Nys' favour, right?
Mind you, I can’t see Pauwels finishing off the podium today, not without really bad luck
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Yeah, but 2nd places is in Yoah's favour
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Oh noes
Bianco – an Italian – travelled all the way to Holland, only to find out that the Italian federation forgot to register him.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Nooo!
(I think it was in 2008 when Sarah Düster was not selected for the Worlds team by the German Fed – so she was super-excited to go the next year, only to find out, once she was there & going to sign in, that the Fed had failed to register her. Teute & Arndt were especially vocal against the Fed, IIRC!)
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
so who is the biggest candidate to win today?
pablo777 - January 22, 2012
Kevin
singhstax - January 22, 2012
bartje crash
geert - January 22, 2012
Start troubles
for Rabo – Gerben de Knegt, Bart Aernouts and Jonathan Page. Crash and race over.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Rabo disaster
Jens - January 22, 2012
Aernouts restarts - a minute or so behind everyone else
and with a bleeding knee
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Damn, Bartje. Really hope he gets to Koksijde...
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Hi, everyone. I noticed a
really AMAZING photo of Stybar in this month’s ProCycing mag yesterday (the one with Spartacus on the cover.) An action shot, with Klaas V in the near background, a huge 2-page photo , really really nice. Check it out. (Oh, and the inside photos of Cancellara are quite beautiful, too.)
Ruthann - January 22, 2012
Who took it?
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Let me check....
Ruthann - January 22, 2012
De Waele
majope - January 22, 2012
Excellent photographer
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
It's in the "Folio" section, near the front. There's also a great shot of
Gilbert on the track during the Ghent 6-day meet, by Kristof Ramon.
Ruthann - January 22, 2012
I don't know if we have ProCycling mag in this part of the world
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
There’s a Dutch version—doesn’t make it over the border?
majope - January 22, 2012
Don't know
the TdF special has Gesink and JVDB on the cover, so probably. I’ll have a look around.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
in alle gazettenwinkels
oh, wait, you live in Limburg
broerie - January 22, 2012
Har har :)
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Tommeke Meeusen in the lead
Good to see him back, and right in time for the worlds too. He’s good in the sand.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Most of the World Cups has been criteriums
this year
singhstax - January 22, 2012
Namur and Koksijde were awesome though
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
I think Grandma Pauwels
has some dirt on Pat McQuaid
straw dog - January 22, 2012
World Cup = international = often less bonkers than the Belgian ones
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Heh, I bet Grandma Pauwels
would be hilarious on McQuaid if he upset Yoah!
“A bit of a dick” would just be warm-up!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
She just has that look...
she knows where the bodies are buried
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Andre Meganck says at end of 1st round it was
K.Vantornout-Meeusen-Mourey-Wilghaber-Pauwels-Chainel-Nys-Stybar-V.Amerongen-Boulo- Zahner
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Leading trio
of KVT, Meeusen and Mourey
Pauwels was blocking, letting them be. But Niels Albert is trying to catch up, Nys is following Albert. The two boys from Tremelo (Nys and Albert) have been known to cooperate before.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Pauwels is glued to Nys' wheel
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
So, completely different
from every other race this season…
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Yes, I hope he knows how to wheelsuck
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
He has been practising for a year
on his Playstation
straw dog - January 22, 2012
7 laps to go, chaps!
+ 6 lead 3 to Albert-Nys-Yoah
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
yoah = sucking wheel
geert - January 22, 2012
Hey, can people do me a favour
and if you see any really comedy things in the crowd, let me know?
Albertina has a Styby-pink marmotte-fur hat and pink wellies for the Worlds, but I’m sure we need more accessories!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Stybs caught up with Albert-Nys-Pauwels
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Albert catches front 3 - Styby overtakes Nys & Pauwels!
Hulk it, Sven! Quick, someone hit him with a cup of beer, to get him cycling in angger!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Are we half-race?
I don’t think we are.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Ha, good point
Is that Albert in 2nd now? Damn good riding from the pretty boy
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Yeps, that's him
KVT
Albert
Meeusen
Mourey
Nys
Nys’ shadow
Stybs
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
will this race affect which of the 2nd-tier Belgians get to ride Worlds?
Or do you think the team is decided by now?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Oh, it was decided on Monday
Sven, Pauwels, Albert, Aernouts, Meeusen, KVT, Peeters
No SVT despite Nys’ requests, no DVT
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Oooh, Nys coming up to the front group
and overtaken Styby? Uh? What happened there?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Stybs did his usual
WATCH OUT HERE I COME REALLY REALLY FAST IN ONE SUPER EFFORT… urgh I’m tired
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
That's what he said
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Haha :)
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
*snicker~
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
We had a 'sex equivalent of cross guys' conversation on twitter once
and I think Albertina’s description of Stybar was “thrillingly dominant when he’s on top”
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
That was very funny
I liked Albert starting badly, but getting explosive half-way through and ending up with a thrilling finish!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Dead heat in the women's race
= two girls one cup?
straw dog - January 22, 2012
It'll be fun if he takes that forward to the road season!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
All together at the front
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
I think it's just us in here Pigeons
Time to gossip!
Tell me, what do you really think of Majope?
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Ooh ooh
I like listening in to girls’ gossip
straw dog - January 22, 2012
go ahead
the rest of us will eavesdrop
paisley - January 22, 2012
Well, when i took her to a museum, she ended up trying on corsets!!!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Cool!
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Can't blame her for that
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
and I've never laughed so much at someone eating strawberries & cream in my life!
She was excellent company!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
We did have fun.
majope - January 22, 2012
Yikes, gs, I think she overheard us talking about her!
:-O
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
What do you think of broerie?
Does he come from one of those strange parts of Belgium?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Yes
Of course, all parts but my part are strange
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
ha
Limburg is not strange ?
geert - January 22, 2012
In het bronsgrooooooooeeeen eeeeeeeeeeiiiiikenhooooouuut
I forgot which part you’re from
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
baal
centrum of the world
geert - January 22, 2012
Right, how could I forget?
CX-capital of the world.
Still, Antwerpen. Dikke nek :p
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Wait, Baal is Vlaams-Brabant right?
Whoops :D
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
pfff all the same to me
When it’s not de Vloanders, it’s the third world IMO
broerie - January 22, 2012
You guys are crap gossipers.
Antique corsets and Broerie’s strange parts?
Either this is some secret code, or we need something much more salacious, please.
straw dog - January 22, 2012
It's okay--I'm not listening.
majope - January 22, 2012
not only that, but I bet you can hold your own
paisley - January 22, 2012
Ya gotta use your imagination, sdog
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
Mourey slippery slippery
it’s dangerous to ride behind that boy
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
heh, which would you rather - ride behind Mourey or Simunek?
and who would be more dangerous to try to overtake?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Ideally they'd take each other out
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Albert leading
Do you think the slight gap between Nys and the front group is just left there so Nys can get a huge acceleration if he is able to Hulk?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Nys & Pauwels
Jens - January 22, 2012
Ha!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
If this is a party
then I’m late
TheFigurehead - January 22, 2012
Only fashionably so
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Half hour done
Time for some Hulkage. Get going Sven!
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Funny that they're still all together
But, it’s crit-style again….
(I type that and KVT & Tommeke zoom of, and Yoah takes the lead, blocking – tactics!)
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Pauwels frisky now
Jens - January 22, 2012
Not enough mud today.
majope - January 22, 2012
No, not really
Bah. We got hardly any decent mud races this year, and no snow and ice at all
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
was it Niel last year where they were pedal-deep in muddy puddles?
sigh….
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Hamme-Zogge
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Oooh--nice!
majope - January 22, 2012
In two days we got the same amount of rain
we’d normally get in a month. Fun!
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
nostalgia!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
If global warming keeps up like this, we'll need to move the CX season north....
(Or allow soaking the course with fireengine hoses…)
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
That would be fun.
Especially if they were riding at the time.
majope - January 22, 2012
I would enjoy cross a lot more
if you could convince Seeldrayers to race. Cross needs more BCS.
TheFigurehead - January 22, 2012
Niels Albert won the queen mountain stage of Circuito Montañes in 2010
beating Tom Jelte Slagter
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Nys a bit stressed?
Jens - January 22, 2012
He looks it
Not as fluid as normal
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Lars Boom
has let Sporza know that he thinks Nys’ll win today
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
a connoisseur!
broerie - January 22, 2012
mention of Cancellara?
paisley - January 22, 2012
"Stybar attacking like Cancellara"
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
My flemish is getting better...!
pablo777 - January 22, 2012
Cancellara and Styby same sentence.
pablo777 - January 22, 2012
Gingerbread is out of the oven, folks!
Please let it cool a few minutes before digging in.
majope - January 22, 2012
Ohhh, warm gingerbread
nom nom nom
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
Yum!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Ouch...! Just burned my self...!
pablo777 - January 22, 2012
She said to WAIT
Next time listen to wise woman
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
you never tell the fat kid to wait..!
pablo777 - January 22, 2012
with strawberries and cream?
paisley - January 22, 2012
Just not the same without Pigeons.
And ducks, for that matter.
majope - January 22, 2012
Ha! I have a huge grin, remembering you being attacked by ducks!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
The crispy duck I had for dinner when we went out
was a delicious revenge!
majope - January 22, 2012
Nys suffering :'(
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Unless Pauwels offered him a Playstation?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
A used Playstation?
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
Used playstation?
Recession hits CX
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Recycling
He’s just trying to save the planet
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
getting a proper lesson today
singhstax - January 22, 2012
Yoah solo
few seconds gap over Stybs and co
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Nys in sixth place, 15s down
bah
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
so disappointing
maybe he should’ve ridden yesterday?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
he did!
came in fourth somewhere
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Oh really?
Isn’t he usually better on the 2nd day of racing?
(Maybe his back thing wasn’t sandbagging after all? Or he peaked too soon this season?)
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Usually yes
but I don’t think it’s a law per se :)
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Ha. His coach explitely forbade him winning yesterday
“Twelfth, that’s the best you’re allowed to do.”
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
I'm just hoping it's sandbaggage
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Maybe we see
the K-Pow / Stybs sprint-out that we were denied last week?
Still could be some fun here.
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Albert and Nys both looking a bit deflated
paisley - January 22, 2012
hmmm me think
sandbagging for next week
geert - January 22, 2012
Albert definitely
He’s the master sandbagger
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Didn't someone suggest his hand injury was sandbaggage?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Pauwels leading the front group!
REALLY wants this!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Also makes sense for him to push out a big gap
he could probably even recover from a mechanical at this stage without losing the series
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Klaas Vantornout
is going good today
singhstax - January 22, 2012
Did I just see an Aussie shirt??
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
yeah, me too
paisley - January 22, 2012
Yep
K-Pow just lapped him
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
yep
Lewi ratray

geert - January 22, 2012
Lewis Rattray
singhstax - January 22, 2012
Cool, I think Aussies would bring an extra level of craziness to this sport!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
besides Page's crash, has anyone spotted any Americans?
paisley - January 22, 2012
Nope
The foreigners won’t come out to play til next week
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
hope they do get to play a bit
paisley - January 22, 2012
Oh, they always do
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
“No world cup win for Nys, but god, he already has seven. Who’s keeping up with that count?”
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
With 2 laps to go, Nys is +30 down
:’-(
Pauwels, Styby, KVT lead, Albert + 5

I can't wait to see what's on his website!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
I have no words!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012

tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
My reaction exactly.
majope - January 22, 2012
imagine, someone thought that was a good idea
paisley - January 22, 2012
I understand why he got lapped
Must be difficult to race if your legs look like that

tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
So he has that going for him, which is good.
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Damn
“which is nice.”
tedvdw - January 22, 2012

you could think he is from Limburg

Loopy. I'll take that.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Ha! On his site he's titled this one "for the ladies" - I like this dude!

tedvdw - January 22, 2012

paisley - January 22, 2012
Ha!
majope - January 22, 2012
Pauwels perfectly timed his downtime this season it seems
Anonymous for a while and back in form for the Worlds.
Jens - January 22, 2012
Yes
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Skipping the holy week of cross
seems smart now, yes
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Indeed
Smart, but dull, though!
How does he go on the sand?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Not super, but ok
Good enough to be able to power back on the grass bits if he’s in top shape though
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Yes
I thought he looked better technically on the sand
than on the really muddy technical stuff?
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Yeah, he did fine
better than expected. He’s no sand-master, but he’ll be fine.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
World Cup Koksijde
1. Nys
2. Pauwels +1 sec

A yes, the diagonal sprint line
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012

paisley - January 22, 2012
I thought it was also
the more difficult courses around Christmas that had an effect?
But I think he claimed to be sick too, right.
straw dog - January 22, 2012
Yeah, he had his cold, and then his stomach bug)
(which is why Albert had to go one better and catch “pneumonia”!)
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
What one-ups pneunomia?
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Ha!
whatever does it, I’m guessing Albert will be interviewing about it towards the end of the week! ;-D

majope - January 22, 2012
Styby 2nd, nice 3rd place for KVT
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
I do like seeing Pauwels take the lead
and attack a lot. I’m hard on the guy, usually, because I just can’t love defensive riding, even though I know it’s smarter. I think because I know he can ride like he did today, that makes me frustrated with him sometimes
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Where did Peeters come from, to take 5th ahead of Nys??
or did I read that wrong?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Svenneke
I don’t think too much right now. I was just bad. I did what I could, but I couldn’t do much. There were six or seven guys better than me. I didn’t feel fresh. Hopefully, next week I’ll be better. Lots of races in the past, hopefully that feeling will be gone next week.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Hey, I know how he feels
I was in an event yesterday where I did what I could, but there were 774 people better than me.
majope - January 22, 2012
Ha, you can tell we're in the netherlands by the windmills!
Now we need a field of tulips, a canal, milkmaids & a big pile of cheese
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
And wooden shoes.
majope - January 22, 2012
and a cow that fell into the canal
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Haven't seen that before--what is it?
majope - January 22, 2012
It's a very cute picture book
Hendrika the cow is bored with life on the farm and longs to see the city. Her wish comes true in a most surprising way. The author also wrote “The Great Flood” which won the Caldecott Medal, 1991.
It’s lovely! Although I still think this is EXACTLY what Holland looks like, from reading it as a kiddy….

Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Ha! Sure does like to hammer home the windmills and tulips, doesn't it?
majope - January 22, 2012
Indeed!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Thank you!
Brings back lovely memories of reading this to my kids when they were little.
GreylockGrinder - January 22, 2012
I used to have wooden shoes
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Oh that's just super cuter
I love the matching-hat-at-a-jaunty-angle!
I don’t think I could ever get bored of the “baby Ted” photos – they’re always adorable & funny!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Speaking of awwww!
Reminds me that I seriously need these outfits:
majope - January 22, 2012
Yes. Yes you do!
and OMG, Dutch Barbie!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
perhaps these are the hats your crew needs next week
paisley - January 22, 2012
That cap is of epic proportions!
There’s a cap in the older version, too, but it blends into the background. Certainly not as big.
Sadly, they’ve never done a Belgian doll, but I do have a Belgian outfit for Barbie.
majope - January 22, 2012
tri-color stripes?
paisley - January 22, 2012
No! It's orange and green. I'll have to take a picture...
majope - January 22, 2012
Oh, this one?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
What the ef is she wearing?
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
it is tres chic, no?
paisley - January 22, 2012
Yes, yes it is
the outfit is somewhat ruined by the condom on top of her head though
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
And that made me have to update my signature...
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
Dries Van Noten?
Ann Demeulemeester?
(I’m out of Belgian designer names now.)
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Doesn't say anything on the package.
It’s from 2002, and was apparently made for the UK market. But for some reason showed up in discount stores here last year.
majope - January 22, 2012
Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkenbergs,....
we’re actually quite good at this
broerie - January 22, 2012
Yup, that's it!
You found it while I was taking its picture.
majope - January 22, 2012
Post your picture anyway!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
The hat isn't so bad in person--just a pillbox with a net bow:
majope - January 22, 2012
I did google "belgian barbie"
and got this…

Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Oh
That’s Kim Clijsters’ Barbiedoll of course. Well, Kim and Jada.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
If only this one had dark curly hair, I'd buy it for Albertina
because of the marmotte-fure hat
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
and damn, majope, if you need an excuse to make more Cabin Boy Jens
there’s this, which I’m betting you’ve seen!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Yeah, the pirate dolls are fun.
I do have an older Russian Barbie with a fur hat, but she’s still in box. Maybe I can find one cheap out of box so I can get a marmotte hat for Albertina Barbie.
majope - January 22, 2012
but were you ever bunny-hopped?

tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
I saw two--one Rabo and one Belgium champ.
majope - January 22, 2012
nice mix
paisley - January 22, 2012
Yeah, I typed that before the Belgian champ kid came on
The Rabo dude wasn’t Thibau – Nys’ son. Didn’t get a good enough look to see whether the Belgian champ was.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
How many baby Belgian champs do you have?
I would think former champs only get to wear bands on their sleeves.

Suspect, though.
Dirty faces, clean kit.
majope - January 22, 2012
Incredibly awww, right?
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Totally!
I still like the one of Nys bunnyhopping over the kid – and I’m hoping Rob will do some of those too!

Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
K-Pow
I was very strong, but that last lap was hard. I got some pains to my stomache. I saw fairly quickly that Nys wasn’t good today, he couldn’t follow closely. I knew soon that the world cup was mine, but then you try to go for the victory to make it better. I got the win as a present from KVT, who let a gap. The way Klaas is riding maybe he should just ride for himself next week rather than for me. Next week? Everything I get extra on top of this is just that, extra. I’ve got a big classification and my season has been great.
Jesus, if even K-Pow is talking too fast there is no more hope for me.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
Aw, nice of him to thank KVT
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012

Ha, Babelfish isn't much better
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
"Stove flesh" sounds ominous.
majope - January 22, 2012
*bear’s leg:

tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Last year, Nys was terrible in this race
He felt really shit. So he famously went out for french fries that same evening, something he never, ever, ever does during season. He was just fine the week after.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
thanks for the background
so, that tweet was a serious pep talk.
paisley - January 22, 2012
Yep. A 'cheer up mate' from a teammate
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Makes much more sense--and that looks very interesting! What is it?
majope - January 22, 2012
A type of meatball – the exact ingredients of which you’re better of not knowing or contemplating – the size of, uh, a small tennisball-ish. Sliced, put on a skewer with onion slices, and then, of course, deep fried.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
do they sell them at CX races?
If yes, I’m definitely buying one for Albertina!
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
They sell em at most frituurs
though maybe not the mobile ones at the race. On verra.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Looks like something else next to the onion--sausage slices?
majope - January 22, 2012
Hmm, yes, looks like it
Usually it’s just meatball and onion though
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Grilled peppers?
In Holland we call it Bereklauw (Bear Claw). Usually drowned in peanut sauce.
tedvdw - January 22, 2012
I need to come over just to try some of these things.
majope - January 22, 2012
Is that what we call a 'berelul' over here?
broerie - January 22, 2012
I'm not usually very brave trying new food
but I’d give that a go.
VirtKitty - January 22, 2012
why'd you have to spoil this
broerie - January 22, 2012
KVT
Great day for Sunweb, especially the way in which we won. It was very important for the team, and the way we did it… just grabbed the race by the balls the two of us. I was very strong today.
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Stybs
Kevin was the strongest today for sure, and Klaas did a good job as teammate. Kevin is a deserved winner today. Can I win next week? Everything can happen, but it won’t be easy. I’ll have to battle all of Belgium!
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Thanks for the translations, gs!
and the company, everyone!
Am I right in thinking Styby is ending his season after Worlds, btw?
Sarah Connolly - January 22, 2012
Sophie De Boer update (from twitter)
tgsgirl - January 22, 2012
Did you see the photo of Caroline Mani in a wrist cast & bruises on her face?
I’m gutted for them both – I thought Mani would get top 10, and SdB had a chance for the podium. Poor things
Thanks for the update, gs
