Emma Johansson hit by car while training

Swedish olympic silver medallist and current national champion Emma Johansson crashed in training on Grand Canaria yesterday. Apparently both she and the oncoming car managed to swerve, avoiding what might have been a fatal accident according to Emma J in an interview with Swedish television. The accident still resulted in two broken collarbones and some bad bruising. Swedish Eurosport also mention a possible arm-fracture although the Swede herself made no mention of it. She hoped to be back in training in four or five weeks considering herself lucky to escape without even more serious injuries. Recovery will be hard though as two fractured clavicles makes her very handicapped, needing help even to eat and drink

The accident occurred at the end of a 220 km trainingride. An oncoming car overtaking another car illegally, crossed over in the opposing lane in a curve with poor visibility, meeting the rider head-on.

This was the second Hitec Products - Mistral Home rider to collide with a car in the off-season. New signing Sylwia Kapusta also crashed in training earlier this winter but with less serious consequences.

two broken collarbones and some bad bruising… possible arm-fracture

Damn, not how you want to start your season
:(

its bad, but it would appear that she got lucky.

Fucking driver.

If Emma's account is indeed accurate I'm guessing that guy is looking at some jailtime

Overtaking in a curve, crossing a full-drawn line…….

I really, really hope so
She hoped to be back in training in four or five weeks
huh ?
she'll be out of jail

in 4 or 5 weeks for running into that car

According to reports in Sportbladet, it’s also possible that Johannson suffered a broken arm, but the 28-year-old has received conflicting diagnoses from doctors and it hasn’t yet been confirmed.

“I am totally disabled now,” Johannson told Sportbladet. “I drink through straws and need to be fed when I eat.” Johannson, however, remains optimistic, saying it “could have been much worse”, and hopes to begin racing in late February.

Seriously, fuck that driver.

I hope he roasts in hell. Or jail.

+1

HATE crazy car passers. so dangerous …. causes a lot of deaths in these neck of the woods.

Yikes, from her twitter
Got hit by a car on ydays training, two broken collarbone as result! Could have been so much worse… #GuardedByAnAngel #HappyToBeAlive

So pleased she’s (relatively) ok – with time to heal up for the season

If the info about a fracture in her arm turns out to be correct I suspect much of the season is gone.
Bloody hell, that's not good

Especially with it being Olympic year. I guess Hitec is in a better position than they would’ve been last year (well, assuming no one else is hit by a car) but I was really, really looking forward to seeing how the strengthened team would work…

Keeping my fingers crossed they're wrong

I suspect they will re-examine in more detail when swelling has gone down etc.

Speaking of Emma J, did you see her blog from Friday?

She makes a very, very good point about Procycling and how they do/n’t cover women’s cycling

This time I was surprised to find an article with a female cyclist in it! Liz Hatch had some good answers to the questions they asked her and especially I appreciated the way she gave credit to all hard working female cyclists and her explanation of how difficult it is to make a living out of it for us.
But in one way the article annoyed me. Why give Liz Hatch two full pages in a magazine that normally do not write about female cycling? No offence Liz but wouldn’t it be more interesting to have an article about someone who is interesting because of how she races and not by her good looks?

no. :)

Hehe~

Liz is super hot.

but Emma, it’s like the beautiful calling the beautiful “beautiful.”

(I prefer Emma – and hope she heals quickly)

'zactly

I mean, why can’t you have both? #moreemmaplz

That sounds very dramatic

Good thing she managed to avoid being hit by the front of the car, or it could have ended in tragedy. Best wishes for her speedy recovery, hopefully she can be back in top form in the olympics and world championships

She didn't crash

She was hit by an idiot driving a car.

At which point she presumably crashed
Bad news, this

though it could’ve been worse also. Heal up well Emma!

Emma's twitter!
To shower again after 220km,4600hm, 1 ambulanceride ,1 night in hospital and another 1 in hotel can only be described in 1 word: orgasmic!

Made me grin – and I’m glad she’s sounding so upbeat!

Swedish radio interviewed her yesterday

And she did sound upbeat, made a few jokes.

new blog post and video from her hospital bed
