According to a press release issued today, Garmin has a new co-sponsor, Barracuda Networks, and will race as Garmin-Barracuda beginning at the Tour Down Under. Barracuda provides network and content security to corporate clients. The company counts Coca-Cola, FedEx, Harvard University, IBM, L'Oreal, and Europcar among its clients. Team manager Jonathan Vaughters expects to create a long-term partnership with the new sponsor, who replaces Cervélo as the Slipstream co-sponsor. Cervélo will continue to provide bikes to the team.

Press release quote!
"We are always looking for partners who, like Garmin, share our passion and commitment to the best innovations in technology, and Barracuda Networks is a perfect fit," said Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of Slipstream Sports and Director Sportif of Team Garmin-Barracuda. "The partnership with Barracuda Networks is long-term and the company will also allow Slipstream Sports to continue to pursue other co-title sponsor opportunities."
The team will begin racing in their newly designed jersey at the upcoming Tour Down Under. New jersey? Pretty much like the old jersey. Except they added the new sponsor, which is nice, because you know, they're paying for that.

Do I have to do my joke about Estonia in this thread too?
TheFigurehead - January 11, 2012
The Estonians going in for argyle flags are they? ;-)
civetta - January 11, 2012
Argyle is very common on Estonian folk costumes
“Estonia – The land of argyle” is the national motto.
TheFigurehead - January 11, 2012
Since you're geographically *slightly* nearer than me
I’ll take your word for it. ;-)
civetta - January 11, 2012
i even made mine a fanpost this time

We can have both.

There’s probably always going to be multiple threads on big topics. I’m good with that.
Jen See - January 11, 2012
why can't i find a single good "there can only be one" video on youtube?
ant1 - January 11, 2012
Ha!
It also sometimes takes me longer, because in order for these things to show up on Googler news, they need 150 words. You thought 75 or whatever was hard!
Jen See - January 11, 2012
actually, i implemented a solution this time
lorem ipsum’ed the thing, then went back and put in some real words, but i think i deleted the lorem ipsum, bringing it back down to less words.

this one
andrewp - January 12, 2012
I like it much more than the old one. Blue is in fashion I know, but this is nice on the eye.
UrlaubInPolen and I were discussing at the CX champs on Sunday that there are no purple pro jerseys out there. Why is this? Milka sponsor a MTB team and we think there should be a road team too, covered in purple cows.
Albertina - January 11, 2012
Could be a lot worse.
Blue is quite nice, but could use more argyle.
Retancourt - January 11, 2012
problem is it seems again every team upgraded from pale blue to light but darker blue
Saxo, OPQS etc….instead of a sea of black and pale blue now we will have a sea of baby blue…..Hope Leaky is not bluer
On the other side maybe we see a proliferation of big blue hats??
perezbike - January 11, 2012
Leaky looks to be the same on the front and much greener on the back!
So nothing to worry about ;)
Albertina - January 12, 2012
And purple cows would be awesome!
Retancourt - January 11, 2012
Or I was thinking, the front of the cow on the front
and the back of it on the back, complete with udders
Albertina - January 12, 2012
udders would likely be banned by the uci
for being a fairing.
ant1 - January 12, 2012

Significant improvement.
Need to see the bibs and the back of the jersey before throwing $$’s on the table.
Great to see a new non cycling industry sponsor. Chapeau.

lieutenantmudd - January 11, 2012
why? easy to idenify from the air
umwolverine - January 11, 2012
I guess I overreacted
It’s actually not that bad. I like the white panel on the lower back instead of the shoulders.
My only problem with it is the cervelo e on the back and to a lesser degree the shoulders. It’s like frankenstein kit – assembled from dead team’s kits.
Last year’s had this problem much worse. I will give them that it keeps Cervelo’s aesthetic, but it’s definitely more Slipstream now.
lieutenantmudd - January 11, 2012
agree, and like.
That é finally looks like it’s in a nice, balanced spot, well in evidence but not totally overwhelming. Given that it has to be somewhere, and has to be prominent, it might as well be where it’s at. And if my eyes are not playing games, it is just a little more retro-boxy-square-Garminish, despite being the suave “é.”
JFS_PGH - January 11, 2012
Happy the é is still there
Aly Edge - January 12, 2012
WOW! Peloton is truly dangerous place!
Full of Sharks ( spells Shacks ) and Barracudas! :)
With name like Barracuda, I expected something toothier from their new kit.

but love the new name. I expect we’ll have much mirth with it this year. But on the serious side, it’s always good to see new sponsors for the sport!

Cynically, that might even have sealed the deal…
civetta - January 11, 2012
I like it.
I wonder if Barracuda is ponying up more $$$ than Cervelo? Cuz it sure looks like the Cervelo “e” thing is the predominant logo there.
swells - January 11, 2012
I bet they are paying a fraction of what JV has been asking for for 2nd "name on the jersey"
Jens - January 11, 2012
It's kind of funny
Slipstream is collecting sponsors who won’t pony up for the 2nd name but still hang around. Tata (from Cervelo), Transitions is still around. Cervelo still around. Chipotle still sponsors the team.
lieutenantmudd - January 11, 2012
good spot
interesting
civetta - January 11, 2012

perezbike - January 11, 2012
JV still enjoys 15% discount when he eats at Chipotle.
Uphill - January 11, 2012
More like getting to eat free there anytime...apparently they have special cards they can use
I remember Phinney mentioning something about it right when he was switching to trek-livestrong

http://www.shopslipstreamsports.com/2012-apparel/2011-chipotle-sugar-labs-jersey.html
I very much like their jersey…
JustJoshinYa - January 11, 2012
Well, Transitions and Cervélo still do bike-related things for the team
Transitions being their eyewear supplier (who in the peloton doesn’t have shades?) It’s not like SunGard or HTC or whoever could do jack after they stopped being name sponsors.
Aly Edge - January 12, 2012
Definitely +1
tedvdw - January 11, 2012
+2
(also as suggested by company’s annual reports)
Still a welcome sponsor to the fold though
andrewp - January 11, 2012
Who, Barracuda?
“Barracuda Networks is a privately held corporation based in Campbell, CA.”
http://www.barracudanetworks.com/ns/news_and_events/investor_relations.php
lieutenantmudd - January 11, 2012
Really glad
They kept the “e”.
bdr - January 11, 2012
Still convinced that Cervelo is a house of cards
I’m betting that Cervelo provided almost no money. They didn’t have to…they brought the riders.
And the deal was, when JV landed another sponsor, Cervelo would lose the second sponsor placement.
""We’d like to thank Slipstream for giving us the second team name in 2011 when they had no obligation to do so," said Phil White, CEO of Cervélo. "
Barracuda provides real $
MavicMoto - January 11, 2012
I've been wondering if Cervélo-the-company being sold is a good or bad thing for the cycling sponsorship...
Sarah Connolly - January 11, 2012
The problems with that I think are:
1. Rider contracts aren’t transferable, so they didn’t really bring anyone
2. Slipstream was doing Cervelo a favor. Cervelo’s management company would have had to pay the riders (with whatever money they had left). I am not sure how much Cervelo the company was on the hook for though. But now, Slipstream pays the riders (the non-Sastre expensive ones at least) At a minimum Cervelo could have brought the money that they would have paid out to riders.
lieutenantmudd - January 11, 2012
The contracts were transfered
you do the math!
MavicMoto - January 11, 2012
Just a guess
The teams can swap contracts but the rider probably has an out clause, if he wants?
Chris Fontecchio - January 11, 2012
JV said in his PdC interview he had to resign all the riders
I am sure the last minute nature and knowing you will have the same classics teammates helped keep their riders’ options/price relatively low though.
lieutenantmudd - January 11, 2012
I don't think
they’re providing any cash sponsorship now. They have a three-year bike sponsorship deal, howevs.
I’d be interested to know just how much Barracuda is really bringing. Did they get a cheap deal on naming rights? Or, did they really pony up?
Jen See - January 11, 2012
Noticed the similarity to OP-QS in the sidebar pic.
Will be hard to pick out in the peloton again, although overall I like the kit. Maybe the Cervelo “e” will show up a bit (I hope)
uninformed consent - January 11, 2012

if I watch this sport long enough I will come to understand modern communication. Let’s see, there’s NetApp, data storage. Machines that store stuff, right? There’s Barracuda, which makes the stored stuff safer, right? There’s radio shack, which makes little connectors for the big machines.
Chris Fontecchio - January 11, 2012
If Europcar is a client of Barracuda
Does that mean we’ll see Voeckler working for Christian VDV in the Tour this year?
tgsgirl - January 11, 2012
Other way around, no?
If the client works for the service provider, that would radically, and positively, change my job.
Chris Fontecchio - January 11, 2012
Oh, right
Sep shall work for no man but Sep though. I demand it!
tgsgirl - January 11, 2012
Yay! A new sponsor!
Not enough teams are sponsored by fish—although you’d think after their many close friendships in Curacao, at some point aquatic mammals would pony up some dough.
majope - January 11, 2012
interesting
bike rumor pointed out that magura is a sponsor. they make disc brakes. i think i read somewhere they were looking to work on a full hydraulic group, possibly working in conjunction with the folks (can’t remember their name, german company i think) that came up with the hydro derailleurs.
ant1 - January 11, 2012
I don't know much about disc brakes
But I’d be afraid disc brakes would work too well on a road bike and you’d lose the ability to control speed without stopping or losing too much momentum. Especially in a high speed peloton of 200
lieutenantmudd - January 11, 2012
acros is the hydro shift company
see details here
ant1 - January 11, 2012
I saw that a little earlier today and it piqued my interest too.
It seems a little early to sponsor a team considering I’m not familiar with any prototypes by Magura.
Are discs UCI legal on the road? If they are, they probably won’t be at the end of the year.
brunop - January 11, 2012
there was that magura video that came out a week or so ago
showing very little, but hinting at some sort of road bike product. they showed a pic of something that looked like it could have been part of a brake lever. seems that magura once made hydraulic rim brakes. others have guessed that maybe they’re coming out with Di2 compatible levers. iirc, slipstream buys their shimano components, so they don’t have to run the full group.
the intrigue is nice, even if in the end it’s nothing.
ant1 - January 11, 2012
yeah I saw the video but it leaves a lot to be desired.
